Biography:
For the past 34 years Justin has been a world leader in the practice and teaching of pinhole, experimental photography and obscura creation. His work has taken him from working with Rachel Weisz and Mark Ruffalo in Hollywood to teaching in remote communities in Australia’s Northern Territory. Although Justin has a degree in fine art photography from Derby under John Blakemore and Paul Hill, his pinhole photography started in 1990 when he was head of photography at South Bristol College. He has taught in many photography degree courses in the UK and beyond and for the past 20 years has been an Associate Lecturer at Falmouth University. His most well-known work, ‘Mouthpiece’ was published by Dewi Lewis in 2006, and is still: admired, loathed, and plagiarised in equal measure. As well as colour work he was the one of the forerunners of the solargraph camera, and his website is the ‘go to’ free resource for pinhole and classroom photography.
He was one of the founders of ‘World Pinhole Day’ in 2001 and for the past 6 years has been a director of the Real Photography company who manage the St Pauls Darkrooms, in his hometown of Bristol, the largest community darkroom in the Southwest. For the past 5 years he has been an organiser and participant of the Annual Experimental Photography festival in Barcelona In this practical filled day participants will learn many pinhole techniques, obscura designs and experimental photography techniques from 6-month pinhole exposures through to pinhole video and cyanotype teabags. As well as appearing on Blue Peter, one of his proudest achievements was selling next doors wheelie bin (adapted into a pinhole camera) to the Royal Photography Society for £250.
